Chilli is the soul of cooking, but for monks avoiding the “five pungent spices,” it means more than flavor. Ven Sik Kwang Sheng calls spices medicine, with chilli warming the body. The “chilli biscuit” is rare locally but common in Shunde China. Although not a real biscuit, why does Majie always carry it? Guntur, India, is the world’s largest chilli market, how do locals use chilli in cooking?

Singapore HeritageFest 2025 features over 100 programmes, including Bridging Generations' (Her)Story of the Majies tour

An experimental theatre production combining Chinese opera, getai and modern music — all with English subtitles — is just one of about 100 programmes at this year's Singapore HeritageFest. The festival, which runs until May 25, puts the spotlight on Singapore's intangible history. CNA spoke to Mr Qazim Karim from HeritageSG and Ms Lim Hai Yen, artistic director of The ETCeteras, the group behind 'Out of the Red Box', a Chinese opera in English.

2024年8月3日，新加坡牛车水将迎来七夕乞巧嘉年华的开幕仪式。此次活动旨在支持新加坡本地艺术团体及社会弱势群体。新加坡总理黄循财先生作为活动主宾为活动开幕。善济医社作为活动的呈现方及赞助支持者，将全力协助传承中华传统文化并促进社区福祉。文化活动将从8月4日至8月11日持续八天，预计将吸引超过50万名公众参与，展示中华文化与社区关怀的完美融合。

七夕乞巧嘉年华由Bridging Generations主办，活动总监黄钰清介绍“七夕节曾在华人社会中享有比春节更盛大的庆祝，但已消失了半个多世纪。此次嘉年华活动旨在庆祝中华传统节日七夕，展示中华文化的丰富内涵。活动形式包括街头派对、文化展示、艺术表演及互动环节，让公众深入体验传统节日的魅力。”

Breaking stereotypes: Singapore launches elderly lion dance troupe

The colourful lion dance appears like any other traditional Lunar New Year performance, but it is led by an 80-year-old man sitting in a wheelchair. The Silver Pride Lion Troupe, a new initiative in Singapore to tackle loneliness among seniors and help them stay active, has modified the choreography to allow participants who have physical limitations.
